Writing a grid

  • Bars are separated by |. Chords in the same bar share it equally.
  • % repeats the previous bar. It stands alone in its bar.
  • A new line also starts a bar. Bar lines at the start or end of a line are optional.
  • A bass note goes after a slash: D7/F♯. The bass counts: B♭/C is heard as a C9sus4.
  • Repeats: |: and :| play the bars between them twice, :| x3 three times. Endings 1. and 2. go at the start of a bar.
  • Sections: a name in brackets, [A] or [Bridge], starts one. A name alone replays that section: type an AABA tune as [A] … [A] [B] … [A].
  • Key changes: key:E♭ in a section name ([B key:Eb]) or at the start of a bar sets the key from there to the end of the section.

Chord symbols

Letters A to G, ♯ or ♭, then a type. Capitals matter: M7 is major, m7 is minor.

Symbol Name Also accepted

Colours

  • Tonic: rest, home.
  • Subdominant: movement away from home.
  • Dominant: tension that wants to resolve.
  • Other: outside the key, or not clearly one of the three.

Roman numerals

  • The numeral is the chord root's degree in the key, counted on the major scale: ♭III is a minor third above the tonic. Lower case marks a chord with a minor third.
  • V7/ii is the dominant of ii. subV7 is its tritone substitute, a half step above the chord it resolves to.
  • A key name above a chord means the harmony has moved to that key. Chords then take their numeral in the new key.

Scales

  • Tap a chord in the grid: its scales are listed best fit first, with the reason. The best fit depends on the key, the chord's role and what it resolves to.
  • Highlighted notes belong to the chord. A scale that lacks a chord tone says which.
  • Notes are always written with letters (C D E F G A B), in every language.
